We are delighted to have been announced as London Sport’s Club of the Year! Our Hornbeam JoyRiders women’s cycling group won the award out of 300 other nominees.
Carolyn Axtell, the founder and Coordinator of Hornbeam JoyRiders received the award on behalf of Hornbeam JoyRiders last night along with Melanie Draaijer and Gen Ford, two of JoyRider’s group members, Volunteer Ride Leaders and who have also become professional cycling instructor after being part of Hornbeam JoyRiders.
“We are delighted to have this recognition of our achievements in supporting so many women from Waltham Forest and beyond to empower themselves and find their joy through cycling!”
Hornbeam JoyRiders started in January 2017 when Carolyn Axtell, one of Hornbeam’s staff, invited a few women who lacked confidence in cycling to come on a bike ride, and soon discovered that there is a significant, growing demand for support to help women start cycling. The group works particularly but not exclusively with Muslim women in Waltham Forest.
They’ve gone from strength to strength, recruiting women to the JoyRiders weekly rides, training volunteer Ride Leaders, setting up cycle training, giving members the opportunity to train as professional cycle trainers, and most importantly – organising weekly rides that bring enjoyment, increased fitness, confidence and friendship to so many women.
Carolyn continued: “We are all thrilled to accept this award on behalf of all the amazing women who participate in our weekly JoyRides, and the committed volunteer Ride Leaders who give so much of their time to support and encourage other women to cycle. This project would not exist without our dedicated volunteers. We hope to be able to engage with even more women to help them discover the joys and the freedom of cycling in future!”
Congratulations to all Hornbeam’s JoyRiders!
