The Hornbeam has always been a strong advocate of cycling as a sustainable, low impact, healthy, fun mode of transport!
We helped to establish and have continued to support the vibrant cycling community in Waltham Forest.
Joyriders London was initially a project of the Hornbeam Centre and we worked with the council to set up the Community Cycling Forum.
Last year we received funding from Active Londoners (GLA) to support getting more BAME women cycling. We worked with local cycle groups FECycle, Cycle Sisters and Cycle Brothers to build their capacity to run more rides and develop their volunteer base eg. Cycle Sisters was able to train more Ride Leaders and offer weekend beginner rides for Muslim women to start their cycling journeys.
We are also delivering cycling projects in the north of Waltham Forest. Supported by Waltham Forest Council we have been working at Friday Hill TMO in Chingford to deliver a series of cycling interventions from Dr Bikes workshops, led rides and bike maintenance workshops.

Good Deeds on Bikes
Hornbeam’s Good Deeds on Bikes scheme allows you to help out your local community whilst spending some time on your bike!
The scheme has been running since January 2019 and initially involved volunteers (on their bikes) picking up surplus food from local supermarkets (the stuff that would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the day) and dropping it off at the Hornbeam. All the food collected was saved from landfill and redirected to our projects. As the volume of food collected increased cycling volunteers also got involved with redistributing food to food banks and community organisations.
Recently Good Deeds on Bikes has been involved in the Hornbeam’s Covid 19 response delivering meals and grocery bags to those shielding and vulnerable in the community. Over the last 6 months we have delivered over 6000 meals, 2500 grocery bags and helped over 100 households who receive regular deliveries sometimes on a daily basis.
We are always looking for more volunteers to help us with these deliveries that happen between 12-2pm everyday! To sign up email firstname.lastname@example.org
