Community Mondays…

The Hornbeam space is a resource for many working for a better community and social justice in the area. We play host to language classes, music classes, discussion groups, local activists and our space becomes more needed as so many other spaces are being squeezed.

Community Mondays are one-off, drop-in opportunities 11am-4pm – we help maintain the space together, pick up some skills and have some lunch too.

Monday September 21st PUBLICITY AND SOCIAL MEDIA for APPLE DAY… Come help spread the word about apple day:  learn how to use hootsuite/twitter and write some tweets, share on social media, head out to cafes/shops to distribute leaflets and fliers.

email volunteering@hornbeam.org.uk to let us know you’re coming, or complete the volunteering form.

Check the calendar for future weeks… let us know if you have an idea for a session!

This year there will be two Apple Days: an annual event celebrating the healthy, humble, tasty apple – and all the other good things that Autumn brings.  We will celebrate on 10th October – Vestry House and 11th October at the Learning Lodge, E4.

You can help plan and organise the catering for sweet, savoury baked goods, mulled apple juice and cider with the Hornbeam Team and Jenny and Kate in the Cafe.  Anyone who wants to be part of the day by baking, serving, or wants to get experience in catering generally… you can bake beforehand, or come to help out, and also get an AQA in Event Volunteering or Food Hygiene Level 2.

Monday 5th 2-5pm,   Wednesday 7th 6.30-9pm, Friday 9th 6.30-9pm.   And of course – Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th.

We’re looking a confident PC user with some experience of PC maintenance and a willingness to learn. A knowledge of Ubuntu and other open-source platforms and software, and experience installing and maintaining hardware would be very welcome too.

You’ll be available for around 1-4 hours a week, preferably between 10am-5pm, and will be supporting our teams at Hornbeam and the John Beanse Centre.

Work Experience

A 12 week programme for 18-30 year olds who want to gain work experience: in return for your help operating our warehouse and paint shop we will provide structured support to help you identify and make progress towards your own employment and training goals. As a participant, you will also help us prepare and deliver a small project (possibly using our paint in your own community).
When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10 am-4 pm (Other days may be available if required)
Where: The Paint Place Warehouse in Leytonstone (near Leyton Midland Road) and The Paint Place Shop in Walthamstow (near Bakers Arms)
Commitment: Up to 3 days per week for 12 weeks

Warehouse Volunteer (The Paint Place Warehouse)

We always need help sorting and mixing the reclaimed paint that we collect for redistribution. Warehouse volunteers play a crucial role in keeping an affordable supply of environmentally sustainable paint flowing out of FRP into the wider community. If you are prepared for physical work that can get a bit messy, this could be just for you.
When: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 am-4 pm
Where: The Paint Place Warehouse in Leytonstone (near Leyton Midland Road)
Commitment: At least 1 day per week for at least 12 weeks

Retail Volunteer (The Paint Place Shop, FRP Centre)

Our paint shop at the FRP centre is where we trade to the general public. We need volunteers here who can help customers choose the right paint for them, carry out and record sales transactions and help to keep the shop nice and tidy. Let us know if you are up for helping us to sell thousands of litres of paint!
When: Tuesday- Friday 10 am-4 pm, Saturday 10 am-2 pm
Where: The Paint Place Warehouse in Leytonstone (near Leyton Midland Road) and The Paint Place Shop in Walthamstow (near Bakers Arms)
Commitment: At least 1 day per week for at least 12 weeks

Events Volunteer (Give-or-Take)

FRP organise community waste exchange events, where people can leave items that they no longer need and collect things for which they have a use free of charge. Volunteers help with many aspects of these events from engaging with members of the public and staffing the stalls to giving our driver a hand with deliveries. This role particularly suits busy people who cannot commit to volunteering every week.
When: Flexible, when events are taking place, mostly on Saturdays
Where: On location, mainly in North East London
Commitment: Flexible, as and when required and you are available.

Address: 2c Bakers Avenue, Walthamstow, London E17 9AW (next door to Hornbeam)
