Where our food comes from
The Hornbeam Café and Organiclea Community Growers believe in the importance of sustainably grown food and want to celebrate the good connections that local food creates.
Organiclea grow fruit and vegetables at our Hawkwood Nursery market garden site in Chingford. We have regular volunteer opportunities, open days and training courses at this beautiful 12 acre site.
The Hornbeam Café and Organiclea’s box scheme and market stalls are also supplied by small-scale organic farmers in Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and by other local allotment and garden growers selling their surplus through a ‘Cropshare’ scheme.
The bread is baked by the Hornbeam Bakers’ Collective, a group of local bakers who organise themselves to provide handbaked organic good loaves – for sale in the café from Wednesday to Friday, on Saturdays at the Hornbeam and Leytonstone market stalls.
We also source from further afield, for example fairtrade bananas from the Dominican Republic, lemons from Spain. Our dried goods come from Suma Wholefoods Cooperative.
