Gardening for Wildlife in Waltham Forest
The first of the Hornbeam Centre’s summer events to highlight the borough’s astonishing biodiversity took place on Sunday (May 16th 2010). A guided walk in Epping Forest, funded by the borough council, was an ideal opportunity to take in the range of plant and animal life in this wild rural space so close to our doorsteps (see attached photos). Led by ecologist Annie Chipchase, the walk started from Hawkwood Nursery in North Chingford, home of local food growers’ cooperative Organiclea. Annie pointed out easily overlooked natural battles, like six different tree seedlings fighting for space in a tiny sunlit patch.
